Robert Schumann was a fanciful, unpredictable artist and the romantic musician par excellence. His music leaps from one mood to the next with such lyricism that at times it pushes us to the very limits of our soul. Schumann had no interest in calm or classicism, only boiling emotions jostling with each other. His mammoth symphonies resemble sweeping epics, while his works for string quartet contain equal energy in a more intimate form. His seemingly calmer choral works are marked by references to Johann Sebastian Bach, like a kind of inaccessible ideal.
