In the 15th century, as Venice grew wealthy from its silk and spice trade, lavish art works with diverse cultural inspiration emerged to become one of the finest examples of the dialogue between the Orient and the West. With the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, Venice's influence grew even stronger as many artists settled in the West, bringing their knowledge and mysticism with them. Founded in the 13th century, the tradition of the mevlevi whirling dervishes is one of the most refined aspects of Oriental mysticism and these Sufi orders can be found in many countries around the Mediterranean rim. Through dance, they express the exhilaration of their faith as they spin around and around in their long robes, which eventually appear motionless then seem to ascend towards heaven.
